Message from a reader (12 Dec 2017): St. Maarten Princess Juliana International Airport has been severely damaged by hurricane Irma. At present, arrival, transit and departure procedures are conducted in tents and a former luggage handling facility. Services are limited to small food and drink stands in the departure area. A temporary Arrivals pavilion is now open . The terminal building is not expected to be operational until late 2018, but no firm date has been set.

What to Expect

St. Maarten Princess Juliana International Airport consists of a mid-size terminal that is currently under reconstruction due to extensive damage from 2017’s Hurricane Irma. As of May 2018 services remain limited, and full operational capability and services may not be available for up to another year. .

Where to Sleep

Sleeping in the airport overnight was not allowed prior to Hurricane Irma, and is certainly not feasible now. For uninterrupted sleep, there are hotels near the airport. See Airport Hotels in the airport guide below.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.

Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships

Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there is a lounge that you can enter by paying at the door or through a lounge membership program. If sleeping in St. Maarten Airport does not appeal to you, there are hotels near the airport:

More Services, Facilities & Things To Do On A Layover At The Airport

ATMs / Cash Machines – Need cash? ATMs are available. Fees may apply, so be sure to check your bank’s fee schedule and your daily withdrawal limit if you are travelling internationally. You may also want to notify your bank of your travel plans. Locations: on both levels.

Banking Services – There is a bank located near the main entrance by the car rental desks, they may also be of assistance with currency exchange.

Duty Free & Shopping – There are a number of shops selling clothing, souvenirs, travel accessories, books, alcohol etc. both landside and airside. There is no designated duty-free store.

Food & Drink – There are a number of restaurants, cafes and bars located both landside and airside. At the time of writing, there were no 24-hour food options.

Information Desk – There is a tourist information booth located beside the car rental counter on the ground level.

Luggage Storage & Lockers – Not available.

Smoking Areas – There is a smoking lounge across from Gate C3.
