While I write this in Oct 2006, I didn't know about the site any earlier.
About 12 of us were on a journey from St Petersburg down into the 'stans' and then over the border into China bound for Beijing. SARS closed everything. So only way to get out was to fly to Istanbul. We HAD to use this airport. Very early departure time meant turning up to what looked like an office block ..turns out it was/is, as the terminal had been burnt down a year or two before during some dispute. The inside was lined with white marble heavily streaked with black. No modifications had been made to make the place better for processing passengers, so it was narrow and packed with people trying to get through customs and immigration. Two offices on the right of the queue were immigration. They came out and grabbed (random?) people and then pulled them into the office for 'a chat'. Really a shakedown for cash (no witnesses) The English guy next to got taken. When he got back he was shaking like a leaf.
We were shoved from one room to the next. Lots of people in a poorly designed space. Simple seats. No bells or whistles.
The customs man demanded to see my US. I laid it on the counter. He looked at me and said I could go. He didn't touch the money. I picked it up again, didn't look at him and left. He said nothing. Must have been the right thing to do.
After takeoff, we thought "Good riddance". I've never been so glad to leave a place."
