I found myself forced to sleep at the airport because it was not well served by transit from Barcelona, ie at 10.30 pm the last train arrived and there was not another until 5.30am......and I had a flight that required me to be at the airport at around 4am for checkin. By midnight the security guards walked around making sure that no one was lying down anywhere...just like in the days of Franco. Every time you started to doze off they would come wake you up and tell you to assume a seating postion. This is totally true and happened all over departure hall. I could not believe it. I had no idea that the airport featured 'air rooms' otherwise I would have probably taken one...but I have since found out that they charge 125 euros min for this service, which is a rip off. A bit like their 18 euros per day car park charge...which is the reason I had come by train in the first place.
Finally I went to one of the all night snack bars/cafe's at the airport and noticed that this was the only place that people could grab some z's and not be harrassed by the cops. Plus it had a Wifi connection.
Through my life I have travelled extensvely and sometimes found myself stuck at an airport not through choice, but have made the best of it. Other times I have chosen to spend a few hours at the airport to save on hotel fees...I am not against the hotels but against the exhorbitant prices they magic out of the air. Of all the airports I have ever found myself 'trapped' in, this was the worst and really it felt like a return to the days of Franco with security that would have made him proud. Did I mention that I own a private hotel in france?

Barcelona El Prat Airport Guide

According to a recent alert on their web site, the "Barcelona airport has modified its public information system, reducing the number of messages announced via the PA system. This measure only involves eliminating the boarding announcements and last calls on the PA system that were heard in the Sky Center area of the T1 terminal and in the common area before the T2 boarding modules. Local PA system announcements will still be made in the area next to the boarding gate."
