MAN Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Manchester Airport.

What to Expect

Manchester Airport (Code: MAN) has three terminals (1, 2 and 3). Terminals 1 and 2 are linked by a skybridge with moving sidewalks to assist with the 10- to 15-minute walk. Terminals 1 and 3 are connected by a covered walkway. The airport has garnered a reputation for rude personnel, poor service, outdated facilities and large crowds. Terminal 1 seems to get the fewest complaints, while Terminal 3 edges Terminal 2 for most complaints. There are plenty of dining and shopping options throughout the airport, with Terminal 1 having the largest selection and Terminal 3 having the least. Head to the Spar Grocery Store for last-minute snacks (in all 3 Terminals); they are open 24 hours daily. WiFi is available to help pass the time. Additional comfort can be found through fee-based access to one of the airport’s first-class lounges.

Sleeping in Manchester Airport

Travellers of the airport’s three terminals report the best seating in Terminal 1, where you’ll find plenty of armrest-free seats and benches, especially on the airside. Terminal 2 has many benches, too, but can be louder at night. Terminal 3 is the least comfortable, with few seating options and limited amenities. If you arrive late at night or early in the morning, before security lines open, expect full benches and many travellers scattered on the floors. Remember your earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones wherever you rest for the night, as noise is a common complaint. Airport Hours

The airport is open 24 hours. A reader reports that security gates in Terminal 3 close around 11:00 PM and reopen around 3:30 AM, preventing access to the airside area overnight. (February 2020)

Rest & Relaxation Zones

A reader reports a quiet seating area in Terminal 3, airside past duty-free, labelled “Additional Seating.” Signs request that passengers keep noise to a minimum. (December 2022)

Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships

Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there are lounges that you can enter by paying at the door, purchasing a lounge pass or through a lounge membership program.

Terminal 2
  • Escape Lounge  – Location: Terminal 2, Airside, Mezzanine Level, after Security and Duty Free. Hours: 3:00 AM – 8:30 PM. Lounge Access: Pay at the Door (from £55 per person) • Prepaid lounge passes (from £39.99 per person) • Lounge membership programs.
  • The Executive by Escape Lounges – Location: Terminal 2, Airside, Upper Departure Lounge Level, immediately before the Escape Lounge. Hours: 3:00 AM – 8:45 PM. Lounge Access: Pay at the Door (from £75 per person) • Prepaid lounge passes (from £56.99 per person).
Terminal 3
  • Escape Lounge – Location: Terminal 3, Airside, after Security and Duty Free, upper level. Hours: 4:00 AM – 8:15 PM. Lounge Access: Pay at the Door (from £49 per person) • Prepaid lounge passes (from £29.99 per person) • Lounge membership programs. Access is currently restricted to Ryanair passengers.

Food & Drinks

Food concessions generally operate from the day’s first flight departure until the last flight departure of the day. At the time of this update, no 24-hour dining options are confirmed. Food options include: Grain Loft (Terminal 1, airside) operates 6:00 AM – 4:00 AM, and WHSmith (Terminal 3, landside) operates 6:00 AM – 4:00 AM.

Mobile Charging

A reader reports a device charging point in Terminal 3 Arrivals, at a table near the information desk.

Showers

Showers are available at the Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport.

Basic access to shower and changing facilities costs about £6.50 per person, or £12.00 for shower access plus use of the hotel’s leisure facilities.

Location: Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport, connected via the Skylink walkway from the terminals.
Hours: 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Mon–Fri) and from 8:00 AM (Sat–Sun).

A traveller notes that the shower facilities close at 9:00 PM, even though the gym facilities they are attached to close at 10:00 PM. (July 2022)

WiFi/Internet

Free WiFi is available for up to 4 hours within a 24-hour period. Connect to the “_FreeWifi” network. Premium WiFi is also available at the following rates: £1.00 per hour • £10.00 per day • £30.00 per month.

ATMs / Cash Machines -ATMs operated by Travelex are available throughout all three terminals, including currency ATMs. Fees may apply.

Baggage Trolleys – Available throughout the terminals. Rate: £1 coin or €2 coin.

Baby Care Facilities – Baby changing facilities are located in or near women’s restrooms. Seating for breastfeeding is available. Boots stores (landside and airside) offer a pre-order service for baby milk; orders can be placed up to five days before travel and collected after security. Some cafés may assist with warming baby bottles.

Children’s Play Area – Location: Terminal 2, Airside, near Departure Gate 213.

Currency Exchange – Travelex currency exchange is available in all three terminals.

Fast Track Service – Priority security screening is available for a fee. Cost: from £5. Advance booking recommended.

Family Services – Travellers with children in strollers may receive complimentary fast lane access at security checkpoints. A breastfeeding facility is being trialled in Terminal 1 Departure Lounge. The room accommodates up to four mothers at a time and is intended for breastfeeding mothers and their young children. A nearby Children’s TV Zone provides seating for accompanying family members.

Grocery Store – Spar convenience stores offer sandwiches, takeaway meals, and groceries. Locations: Landside in Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Open 24 hours.

Pharmacy – Boots Pharmacy locations are available airside in Terminals 1 and 3.

Postal Services – A postal counter is available at the Spar shop in Terminal 1.

Prayer Room – Four multifaith prayer rooms are available. Rooms are neutral in design, with a qibla direction marker for Muslim visitors. Prayer books and mats are available through the Chaplaincy. Wudu washing facilities are available landside and airside in Terminals 2 and 3.

  • Terminal 1: Landside, Ground Level Check-In, next to the Chaplaincy office. Christian prayers held at 8:30 AM (Mon–Fri). No airside prayer room.
  • Terminal 2: Airside in the main retail area and landside in the Arrivals concourse near the Chaplaincy office.
  • Terminal 3: First floor (below Departures, above Arrivals). Jummah prayers held Fridays at 13:00 GMT / 13:30 BST.

Runway Visitor Park – Aviation viewing area with runway views, a Concorde hangar tour, restaurant, gift shop, cycleway, viewing mounds, and children’s play area. Entry is free for visitors arriving on foot, bicycle, or public transport. Location: about 3 miles from the terminals. Seasonal hours apply.

Shopping – Duty-free and a selection of retail shops are available in all terminals. WHSmith stores operate according to flight schedules.

Smoking – Designated smoking areas are available in Terminal 1 (via the food court) and Terminal 2 (near Gate 300). The airport has previously indicated plans to add a smoking area in Terminal 3.

Spa & Salon Services – AeroSpa offers beauty treatments, manicures, and massages. Location: Terminal 1, airside.

Airport Transportation: Getting To/From The Airport

Bus and Coach

MAN airport is well connected to the local and long-distance bus system, with at least nine buses connecting at the airport. Bus 43 (Piccadilly Gardens – Manchester Airport) operates 24 hours daily. For routes, schedules and more information, visit the Manchester Airport website.

Car Rentals

Onsite car rentals are handled in a designated facility known as the Car Rental Village, linked to the airport terminals by free shuttle bus service, with departures available every 10 minutes. The following car rental agencies are available: Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt.

A few area hotels provide airport shuttle service. Courtesy phones are located on the arrivals level, near the Information Desk.

Metrolink

Metrolink light rail trams serve the Greater Manchester Area with 92 stops along the line. The Metrolink stop is inside the airport, adjacent to the rail platform. Trams depart every 12 – 15 minutes during service hours. Automated ticket vending machines are available at all tram stops. Taxi

“Black Cab” taxis are available in the ground transportation area of the terminal on a 24-hour basis. Fares for trips within the Manchester Licensed Area are charged according to the meter. However, drivers are not required to use the meter for trips outside the licensed area. A list of maximum fares is available at the taxi rank to help you negotiate a fair price for your journey.

Train

Manchester Airport Station is served 24 hours a day by local and regional trains operated by TransPennine Express and Northern Rail. Trains depart every 10 minutes between the airport and Manchester Piccadilly in the city center (total trip time 20 minutes). Some destinations connected to Manchester Airport by train are Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool and more.

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

  • Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
  • Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
  • Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
  • Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
