Calgary Airport

Lasting Impressions....

"Every one is nice enough but if possible ask for the name of a good chiropractor. You'll need it. " (unknown)

"I felt pretty safe (I'm female) but I did sleep with my arms around my carry-on, since it had my passport and wallet inside." (?)

"Even worse than the lack of comfortable seating conducive to sleeping was the constant Country Top 40 music that blared over the public address system all night long." (Ben)

"It hands down beats 90% of airports throughout North America, Europe and the rest of the airport sleeping world." (Paul)

I had a choice of either going to Calgary and spending about 20(CAN) to store my luggage and for transport going both ways. Since you have to be back at 11pm, I figured I'd just stay from 4 pm until my connecting flight at 7am. At around 7pm I went to a bar called Kelsey's. I had 2 beers which I believe were called Rikards. Kelsey's was basically your TGI Fridays. Bartender had TGI Fridays personality and told me about him metal band. I met two people at the bar and was explaining to them how I haven't been in North America for over a year.

After the overpriced beer (I guess that's what you must expect for an airport) I sat down on what would be the bed of my night. Shortly after a man came up to me and offered 5 Busch beers to me, explaining that he couldn't drink them all before his flight. I took his offer and talked to him a little before he had to catch his flight. I took them outside with me and offered them to anyone in the smoking both, so I could have something to start a conversation with. No one declined.

I slept from around 11pm until 3am, was woken up by floor cleaners and couldn't get back to sleep because of my jet lag. Overall, it was a great flight. One of the worst parts was the US customs, which, I guess is bad everywhere if you have the musical equipment you're traveling with. They always ask me the history of music to make sure I know I don't have anything dangerous.

Also, this airport had free wi-fi.

I recently arrived in Calgary on a Saturday night around 9:00. I couldn't go through security at the "B" gates so had to walk a long way to "A" gates to clear security and all the way back on the other side of a glass wall to "B" gates. Ridiculous. Also, there is a nice shopping area in the airport - but everything was closed at 9:00 PM - even the news stand at the departure gates. Couldn't buy a bottle of water until a cleaning person showed me a vending machine (he spoke no English). There were some nice large leather arm chairs. There should be 24- hour vendors of at least water and magazines.
