Sleeping in Airports

Airport Adventures: Douala Airport

by a traveller

We were threatened at knifepoint in middle of terminal after a shouting standoff, followed by us being surrounded by gang of baggage handlers demanding money.

“One word for a modest experienced traveller…. terrifying. Delayed in Doula for almost 24 hours while waiting for a connecting flight to Paris (Air France) with female companion. Constantly harrassed by everyone at the airport (baggage handlers, cleaning staff, other passengers, airport security, Air France officials) – All (including Air France security) demanded bribes. We were threatened at knifepoint in middle of terminal after a shouting standoff, followed by us being surrounded by gang of baggage handlers demanding money. Only refuge was a cafe that unfortunately shut, leaving us back amongst the crowd. Finally checked into boarding lounge after almost a full day of cat-and-mouse with gangs in terminal, and once again had to bribe our way through Air France check-in staff (wouldn’t accept our tickets which were completely valid), Air France security, airport security (asked for money because he threatened arrest as it was ‘illegal’ to give bribe money in the airport!). Travelled to many airports in Asia/Africa – Douala is head and shoulders above anything in potential dangers and unrest. You will not sleep a SECOND in this airport!”
