Fairbanks Airport (code: FAI) consists of a small but modern terminal. A few eateries and newsstands/gift shops are located on both sides of security. WiFi is available to help pass the time. There are no private lounges at this airport.

Sleeping in Fairbanks Airport

We do not yet have any recent sleep-related airport reviews. Past reviews described airport staff as friendly and accommodating to overnight sleepers. There were reportedly several sleeping options, including comfortable seating throughout the airport and assorted quiet nooks. Look for a corner nook near the big stuffed grizzly bear. The terminal building is open 24 hours. Passenger screening checkpoints open approximately two hours before the first scheduled departure of the day. Overnight stays are permitted in the public areas of the terminal.

YMCA Military Lounge – Location: Landside, Lower level near baggage claim at FAI. Hours: 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM (staffed on a voluntary basis). Showers: No. Dedicated Rest Zone: No. Sleep Facilities: No. Lounge Access: Restricted to U.S. military ID holders only (no general pay-at-door, no prepaid public passes, no standard membership programs).

Two dining options are available: North Pole Coffee (Airside. 4:30 AM-10:30 PM) • The Local @FAI (Airside. Hours: 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM). Vending machines are available on both floors.

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.

More Services, Facilities & Things To Do On A Layover

ATMs / Cash Machines – ATMs are available throughout the terminal. Fees may apply, so check your bank’s fee schedule and daily withdrawal limit if travelling internationally. It may also help to notify your bank of your travel plans in advance. Locations: Landside (1st floor near the escalator and across from the Ravn Alaska ticket counter) and Airside (near TWIGS Alaskan Gifts).
Baggage Carts – Baggage carts are available to assist with luggage. Usage fees may apply.
Duty-Free & Shopping – TWIGS Alaskan Gifts operates two locations: one landside on the 1st floor (open to the public) and one airside for ticketed passengers. Hours: Daily, 5:00 AM – 1:00 AM.
Information Desk – An information desk is located in the Greeter Lobby.
Massage Chairs – Self-service massage chairs are available near Gate 3. Fees apply.
Postal Services – Mailboxes are available for dropping off letters and postcards. Locations: near Gate A and in the baggage claim area.
