To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Grand Rapids Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

What to Expect

Grand Rapids Airport (code: GRR) has a small but modern terminal with two concourses (A and B). Eateries and newsstands/gift shops are on both sides of security. After these services close for the night, vending machines provide the only food and drink options, so plan accordingly. WiFi is available to help pass the time. There are no private lounges at this airport.

Sleeping in Grand Rapids Airport

Sleeping in Grand Rapids airport has been described as challenging due to the uncomfortable bucket seats. If you intend to spend the night in this airport, consider bringing a sleeping bag and travel mat for increased comfort. Also, consider bringing earplugs/noise-cancelling headphones to drown out the constant noise from the airport TVs. For uninterrupted sleep, there are hotels near the airport. Remember that TSA, airline check-in, and baggage drop hours vary according to the flight schedule. Check these hours with your airline. If you are in the terminal’s public area (landside), you will not be able to get through to the terminal’s secure area (airside) until the morning.

Airline Lounges

Military Lounges

Military Welcome Center – The center is open to military members, veterans, and their families. Amenities include flight monitors, lounge area, refreshments, charging stations and interactive maps and murals where military personnel and veterans can pinpoint where they have been stationed or deployed. Location: Landside, Grand Hall. Hours: 24 hours.

Drinking Water

Water bottle refill stations are reportedly available throughout the terminal. (Reader report, December 2024)

Food & Drinks

Food and beverage outlets operate on varying schedules, with some opening around 4:30 AM or 5:00 AM. There are currently no 24-hour dining options.

Vending machines are available near the entrance to Concourse B and on Concourses A and B.

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

  • Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
  • Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
  • Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
  • Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.

More Services, Facilities & Things To Do On A Layover

Baggage Carts – Baggage carts are available in the Baggage Claim area near the luggage carousels. Fees may apply.
Business Centers – Business Centers offer seating, workstations, power outlets, and free WiFi. Access is free. Locations include the Grand Hall, Concourse A, and Concourse B. Conference rooms are also available for rent.

Family Services

  • Baby Care Facilities – Two nursing rooms are available for those who need a private space. One is located landside, and one airside.
  • Children’s Play Area – Children’s play areas are available both landside and airside.

Information Desk – An information desk is located across from Baggage Claim. Hours: 9:00 AM – 11:00 PM. Airport ambassadors wearing bright green jackets are also available throughout the terminal to assist travellers.

Money

  • ATMs / Cash Machines – ATMs are available both landside and airside. Fees may apply.
  • Currency Exchange – Currency exchange services are not available.

Observation Deck – An observation deck is located on the mezzanine level for plane spotting.
Postal Services – Mail and package drop boxes are available in the front lobby behind the Visitor Information Desk.
Shopping – A small selection of shops sell souvenirs, travel essentials, and reading materials. Both landside and airside options are available. Most shops open around 5:00 AM.
Smoking  – Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes are prohibited inside the terminal and within 10 feet of entrances. Designated smoking areas are available outside.

Bus

Taxis

Taxis are available in the ground transportation area. All taxis are metered, and reservations are not required. At the time of this update, one-way fare to downtown Grand Rapids is $38 in a regular taxis and $40 in a luxury taxi.
