What to Expect

Karlsruhe Airport (code: FKB) has a small terminal that handles low-cost and seasonal flights. The airport is 40 km southwest of Karlsruhe (35-45 minutes by car) and 15 km west of Baden-Baden (15-20 minutes by car). Facilities are basic, with a couple of shops and a bistro/beer garden on the airside. More eateries are within walking distance of the terminal. Bring your own entertainment, as WiFi is free for only 30 minutes.

Sleeping in Karlsruhe Airport

The airport does not allow overnight sleepers. The terminal has limited operating hours, opening just two hours before the day’s first departure and closing after the last arrival. Accessibility Services – The terminal is on a single level and generally easy to navigate. Passengers requiring wheelchairs or mobility assistance should arrange this through their airline at least 48 hours in advance. Induction loop systems are available for hearing aid users.
ATMs / Cash Machines – ATMs are available in both the northern and southern terminal areas. Fees may apply, so check your bank’s withdrawal limits and foreign transaction policies before travelling.
Baby Care Facilities – Baby-changing rooms are available both landside (Arrivals Hall) and airside near the departure gates.
Baggage Trolleys – Trolleys are available inside and outside the terminal and in most car parks. A €1 refundable coin deposit is required.
Conference Facilities – A small conference room is available near the airport bistro.
Children’s Play Area – An outdoor terrace in the departures area includes a small playground for children.
Currency Exchange – There is no full-service currency exchange desk. A machine near the northern ATM can exchange small bills, and change machines are available for converting euro notes into coins.
Duty-Free & Shopping – A few small shops offer duty-free goods, regional products, souvenirs, and basic travel essentials, primarily in the departures area.
Information Desk – An information point is located near the check-in area.
Pet Boarding – Boarding kennels are located near the airport complex and offer heated indoor rooms and outdoor space for dogs.
Prayer Room – A quiet prayer room is available in the Arrivals area at the southern end of the terminal.
Visitor Terrace – A free observation terrace is located at the northern end of the terminal for plane watching.

Bus

Taxis

Taxis are available at the taxi stand in front of the airport terminal. A one-way trip between the airport and Baden-Baden Train Station takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
