SZG Airport Overview

salzburg airport guideTo help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Salzburg Airport.

What to Expect

Salzburg Airport (code: SZG) has two terminals: Terminal 1 is used year-round, and Terminal 2 is smaller but brand new, primarily handling seasonal winter flights. Amenities include several cafes, eateries, and a few shops, with most located landside. Free WiFi helps pass the time. Economy class passengers can pay to enter an airport lounge. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for location and access information.

Sleeping in Salzburg Airport

The airport closes nightly for a few hours. A reader recently (July 2023) asked the Information Desk about staying during the night and was advised that the “airport closes between 11 pm and 3:30 am, but if you show your ticket to the personnel, they’ll allow you to stay. If you leave the airport during those hours, you won’t be able to return until 3:30 am.”  For uninterrupted sleep, nearby hotels offer shuttle service, and several are within a short walking distance. See the Airport Hotels section below for locations, or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos. You can also visit the airport’s website for current information.  For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Salzburg Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.

Airport Hours

The airport is open 24 hours, but the doors lock between 11:00 PM and 3:30 AM.  If you arrive between these hours, you must wait until the terminal opens at 3:30 AM.  If you are inside the terminal and leave for a smoke or some other reason, you will be locked out until the terminal re-opens.
