A guy a couple of meters away was sleeping on chairs. Border guards approached him, woke him up and said that this was not a hotel to sleep in. – a traveller

SOF Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Sofia International Airport.

What to Expect

Sofia Airport has two terminals (code: SOF): the older Terminal 1 handles low-cost routes, and Terminal 2, opened in 2006, houses standard international carriers. A free shuttle bus connects the two terminals. Amenities include a variety of eateries and shops, including duty-free, though none are open 24 hours, so plan ahead if you’re camping out. Free WiFi helps pass the time. Economy class passengers can pay to enter several airport lounges. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for location and access information.

Sleeping in Sofia Airport

According to a traveller in June 2021, security guards will wake up overnight sleepers.  We have no additional details about whether travellers are being asked to leave the terminal or just woken up to make it difficult to sleep. For the daytime sleeper, Terminal 2 is a bit more welcoming than Terminal 1; however, it seems that most seats have armrests or are made of metal. Try the cafe area in T2 for some leather couches. Otherwise, bring a sleeping bag for comfort. For uninterrupted sleep, hotels are nearby, including one in walking distance of T1.  See the Airport Hotels section below for locations, or read traveller airport reviews for more tips.

To help us keep this guide up-to-date, you can add or update information or write a review to submit airport tips and photos.  For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Sofia Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.  For more information on Europe’s Schengen Area, click here.
