At about 11 PM security asked me why I was there. What they want to hear is that you are taking a flight out the NEXT morning. I didn’t have to show my ticket. -a traveller
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Sofia Airport.
What to Expect
There are two terminal at Sofia Airport: the older Terminal 1 handles low-cost routes and Terminal 2, opened in 2006, houses standard international carriers. A free shuttle bus connects the two terminals. Amenities include a variety of eateries and shops, including duty-free, though none are open 24 hours, so plan ahead if you’re camping out. Free WiFi helps pass the time. Economy class passengers can pay to enter several airport lounges. See Airport Lounges in the airport guide below for location and access information.
Where to Sleep
Overnight campers seem to have no problem here, though it isn’t the most sleep-friendly airport. Terminal 2 is a bit more welcoming than Terminal 1, but it seems that most seats have armrests or are made of metal. Try the cafe area in T2 for some leather couches. Otherwise, bring a sleeping bag for comfort. For uninterrupted sleep, hotels are nearby, including one in walking distance of T1. See our Airport Hotels section below for more info.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships
Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there are lounges that you can enter by paying at the door, purchasing a lounge pass or through a lounge membership program (ie. Priority Pass).
