BOS Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Boston Logan International Airport.
What to Expect
Boston Logan Airport (Code: BOS) has four terminals (A, B, C and E), three of which are connected by walkways and all serviced by regular shuttle transit. The airport is quite large, and there always seems to be ongoing renovation work at one terminal or another. You will find plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and services on both airside and landside. The free WiFi helps pass the time. The airport says it has installed mobile charging areas in many of its seating areas, but some travellers say it is challenging to find landside. There are several lounges at Boston Logan, many of which offer passes to economy-class passengers willing to pay the entry fee. However, they are not accessible overnight due to security checkpoint closure.
Sleeping in Boston Airport
While Logan Airport is open 24 hours per day, travellers cannot remain airside once security closes. Those already airside are escorted to the landside and must clear security again when it reopens. Several travellers report being removed from the secure side between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM, even with valid boarding passes.
Landside
Landside is generally not sleep-friendly due to limited seating, armrests, cold temperatures, bright lighting, and tiled floors. Here are a few worthwhile mentions in recent reviews:
- Terminal B: Padded benches along interior hallways offer warmer, more secure options than the baggage claim area. Noise is an issue.
- Terminal C: There are a few armrest-free benches in baggage claim; JetBlue has provided free cots in the past (behind Baggage Claim 4).
- Terminal E: Ther are some quiet areas near check-in and parking access, but multiple reviewers report repeated police checks or being told they cannot rest here.
Airside
- Terminal A: Small resting nooks are available, but travellers report noise and occasional mouse activity. For that reason alone, we’d advise against floor sleeping.
- Terminal B: Some soft benches without armrests, but bright lights and TV noise make rest difficult.
- Terminal C: Travellers report quiet corners when open.
- Terminal E: Sofas and lounge-style seating in connector areas between concourses, plus a quiet sensory/calm room accessible by QR code.
Experiences vary widely, but frequent challenges include cold temperatures, noise, difficulty finding armrest-free seating, and strict staff enforcement against sleeping.
One hotel at the airport is connected to Terminals A and E, and many nearby hotels are within quick shuttle distance. See Airport Hotels below for locations.
Read the latest traveller reviews for more tips. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Boston Airport Guide.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
Airport Hours
The airport is open 24 hours.
Security checkpoints close overnight based on flight schedules. Typical closure windows are:
- Terminal A: approx. 1:00 AM – 4:00 AM
- Terminal B: approx. 1:00 AM – 4:00 AM
- Terminal C: approx. 1:00 AM – 4:30 AM
- Terminal E: approx. 1:00 AM – 4:00 AM
When security closes, airside areas clear out and passengers must move to landside seating and re-enter once checkpoints reopen.
Rest & Relaxation Zones
Boston Airport has casual rest zones with rocking chairs located throughout the terminals. Unfortunately, there are no recliners. Location: Airside.
Take precautions even when sleeping in the rest zones. In December 2019, a traveller at another airport reported that money and credit cards had been stolen from their bag even though the bag was right beside them. Protect and lock your bags as you would sleeping elsewhere in public.
Cots
Boston Airport sees more than its fair share of flight cancellations due to bad weather, particularly in the winter, but this means they are more prepared than other airports. When mass cancellations happen at Boston Airport, cots are available for stranded passengers who opt against getting a hotel room, but they can be tricky to locate. Ask an airline or airport employee or use a courtesy phone to reach someone with access to this information. (Note: Cots cannot be reserved in advance, and they are not available nightly). If this has changed, click here to update the guide.

Security & Safety
Airport staff seem to tolerate airport sleepers if you’re in the right spot. Security guards will relocate travellers in the Secure zone to the pre-security/public areas for the night.
At the time of this update, we have no reports from travellers commenting on safety issues at Boston Airport. However, sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:
- Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
- Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
- Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
- Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
Pro-tip: If you sleep in the public zone, don’t be surprised if you receive an early morning wake-up call. Security is known to make the rounds, waking people up as travellers arrive for morning flights.
