To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Dhaka Airport (code: DAC).

What to Expect

Dhaka Airport has three small, outdated terminals that are easy to navigate on foot: T1 and T2, for international flights, and the Domestic Terminal. Travellers have reported that security guards sometimes ask for bribes or speak in a harassing manner, but this may have improved in the last couple of years. The airport is notorious for its chaos, so expect disorganization, inefficient or non-existent security procedures, and odd policies like prohibiting water bottles in certain airport areas.

Facilities seem limited to a restaurant, cafe and a few small shops. Don’t expect clean toilets. Bring your own toilet paper and sanitizer, just in case. The free WiFi helps pass the time. For added comfort while you wait, economy class passengers can pay to enter a few airport lounges, two of which have showers for freshening up.

Sleeping in Dhaka Airport

Travellers who have reported staying the night here generally don’t recommend it due to the poor facilities, lack of safety and security, and the presence of locals looking to “sell” various services. BDT 3,000 per person) • Prepaid lounge passes • Lounge membership programs • Credit card rewards programs • Complimentary access for select business class passengers on international airlines.

Prime Bank First Lounge – Location: Airside, International Departures, near Balaka Lounge. Hours: open 24 hours. Showers: No. Dedicated Rest Zone: No. Sleep Facilities: No. Lounge Access: Access limited to Prime Bank credit and debit cardholders • Select Mastercard and Visa premium cardholders (Bangladesh-issued cards).

Regency Lounge – Location: Airside, International Departures, near Boarding Gates 5–6. Hours: open 24 hours. Showers: Yes.
Dedicated Rest Zone: No. Sleep Facilities: No. Lounge Access: Pay at the door (approx. BDT 3,000 per person) • Prepaid lounge passes • Complimentary access for selected airlines’ premium passengers.

Drinking Water

Food & Drinks

Food options are limited, particularly late at night. Availability depends on your terminal and time of travel. Travellers report a small selection of cafés and snack options, including Barista Coffee. If you are arriving late or facing a long overnight stay, consider bringing snacks, as 24-hour dining options are not guaranteed.

A reader reports that mobile charging points are available in the International Departures area (landside). Availability may be limited, so carrying a portable power bank is recommended.

Free WiFi is available; however, a reader reports that access may require a local Bangladeshi mobile number to receive a verification code. (October 2019)

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.

Car Rentals

There is a car rental desk outside the airport. The airport suggests that travellers “should beware of cheats and exorbitant rates. It is best to have your guide (most hotels provide guide assistance as a complimentary service) in Bangladesh to take care of this part of the journey.”
