KUL Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
What to Expect
Kuala Lumpur Airport (code: KUL) is a large and busy global hub with two terminals: KLIA Terminal 1 (formerly KLIA1) and KLIA Terminal 2 (formerly KLIA2). Terminal 1 comprises the Main Terminal Building (check-in), Contact Pier (domestic gates), and Satellite Terminal A (international gates), connected by the Aerotrain. Terminal 2 is a single integrated terminal for low-cost carriers. It is located 6km from KLIA 1, and you can connect to it by a free shuttle bus.
The airport has a decent range of amenities – including showers, TV lounges, rest zones and free WiFi. There are several 24/7 restaurants and convenience stores. For those looking for a little added comfort, there are first-class lounges, many of which have showers, that economy-class passengers can pay to access.
Sleeping in Kuala Lumpur Airport
KLIA is generally quite popular with airport sleepers – so much so that the good spots get scooped up quickly! The best and most plentiful chairs and benches are located airside in the Main Terminal, with some especially good spots near the 2nd-floor food court and the Samsung lounge. KLIA2 gets mixed reviews, with some travellers recommending avoidance if possible. Here are sleep spots that travellers have reported:
- Terminal 1 continues to offer the most reliable rest areas, with travellers again noting quiet zones, clean facilities, comfortable temperature, and several suitable resting spots. Gate 10 is consistently mentioned as a good sleep area, with flat seats, leg-rest seats, and some secluded corners.
- A nook near the movie lounge offers a little privacy.
- Terminal 1’s Floor 4 may have padded benches lining the walls, often with staff and locals resting there.
- The Mezzanine area may quiet down and get darker at night.
- Terminal 2 is challenging, with many travellers reporting heavy noise, difficulty finding armrest-free seating, and interruptions by staff. Level 3 of Gateway@KLIA1, near Exit Door 3, there’s a small nook that is dark and a bit private.
No matter where you sleep, bring eyeshades and earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, as this airport is busy around the clock. That said, while the airport is open 24 hours a day, some travellers find themselves restricted on the landside if they try to clear security late at night.
If you’re looking for uninterrupted sleep, there is a transit hotel and sleep pods inside the airport, and several hotels nearby are connected with shuttles. See the Airport Hotels section below for locations.
Read the latest traveller airport reviews for more tips. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Kuala Lumpur Airport Guide.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
Airport Hours
The airport is open 24 hours.
Rest & Relaxation Zones
Rest N Go offers a little oasis of rest and relaxation in the middle of the Main Terminal. Comfortable massage chairs await! Location: Main Terminal, landside, opposite the Air Asia ticket counter.
Take precautions even when sleeping in the rest zones. In December 2019, a traveller at another airport reported that money and credit cards had been stolen from their bag even though the bag was right beside them. Protect and lock your bags as you would sleeping elsewhere in public.
Cots
Cots are not offered to stranded travellers at KLIA. If this has changed, click here to update the guide.

Security & Safety
Airport staff and security generally ignore the many overnight travellers. Several travellers reported feeling relatively safe, but others had somewhat sketchy experiences in landside and airside zones. Minor safety concerns include occasional pickpocketing in Terminal 2 landside areas (Level 2, Arrivals) during late hours. KUL remains generally safe with 24/7 security; sleeping near staffed zones (e.g., Terminal 1, Gate C1 or Terminal 2 Gate L8) reduces typical airport risks.
Sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s essential to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:
- Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
- Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
- Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Please don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who awoke without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
- Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay sharp, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.
Pro-tip: If you sleep in the public zone, don’t be surprised if you receive an early morning wake-up call. Security is known to make the rounds, waking people up as travellers arrive for morning flights.
