Whether you have a layover, overnight sleepover or you are just quickly passing through, our Taipei Taoyuan Airport Guide is a great place to start planning your visit.  Here, you’ll find information on services and facilities available inside the airport – including details about airport lounges, WiFi, mobile charging points, lockers, 24-hour food options, nearby hotels, and everything in between.

the best place to lay-over is the Transit Lounge located in terminal 2 – San

TPE Airport Overview

Taipei Taoyuan Airport (code: TPE) consists of two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, connected by a free Skytrain. Terminal 1 offers a variety of Asian and Western food outlets and shops, while Terminal 2 is newer and more modern, with similar amenities. Several restaurants and at least three convenience stores are open 24 hours daily to help you prepare for your overnight stay. Other airport highlights include the indoor gardens, themed rest zones, and free shower facilities. WiFi is available to help pass the time. Economy class passengers who want to upgrade their airport experience can pay to enter a few airport lounges. Three lounges have showers, and one has a designated nap area.

Sleeping in Taoyuan Airport

TPE has a few comfortable seating options, including reclining chairs throughout both terminals. Travellers report that these are more plentiful in Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 has very few and they are often fully occupied. Quiet nooks offer privacy in case you want to sleep on the floor. Airside generally offers better sleeping conditions than landside, where seating is limited, curved, or sparse. Travellers note that some rest areas and reclining chairs fill quickly. Carpeting is limited, so a sleep mat, blanket, or sleeping bag will provide some much-needed cushion. If you’re sleeping in this airport, you won’t be alone. This might mean extra competition for the best sleep spots and could get noisy with a lot of footfall. Consider bringing some earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones too. Luckily, the airport gets pretty quiet at night, so you can enjoy the peace! A few travellers mention that certain areas can be cold overnight, so extra layers may be helpful.

For uninterrupted sleep, one airport lounge offers private resting rooms by the hour. Otherwise, you can book a room in the capsule hotel on the south side of Terminal 2 or opt for the nearby hotel offering a free shuttle service. See the Airport Hotels section below for locations.

Read the latest traveller airport reviews for more tips. For more airport information, continue scrolling down to explore more in our Taoyuan Airport Guide.

In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.

Airport Hours

The airport is open 24 hours. Landside public areas remain accessible overnight, but airside access depends on flight schedules and security checkpoint operating hours. Some security checkpoints may close overnight, typically reopening around 4:30 AM.

What this means for airport sleepers:
You can stay in the airport overnight, but where you can go is limited. Landside areas remain open 24 hours, while airside access depends on security checkpoint hours, which usually reopen early in the morning. If you arrive late at night, expect fewer open areas, quieter staffing levels, and limited services until morning. Plan ahead in case you need to move once security reopens.

Rest & Relaxation Zones

Taipei Taoyuan Airport has several themed waiting and rest zones located throughout the airside corridors, including areas near Gates A7, B6, and D. These zones are free to use and generally feature padded seating or loungers rather than fully flat beds.

Many of the seating areas are decorated with local or themed designs (such as regional scenery or character-inspired décor), which can make them feel a bit more pleasant than standard gate seating. Comfort and quiet levels vary by location and time of night, so light sleepers may want earplugs or an eye mask.

Lounge Locations:

  • Terminal 1: Landscape Lounge (near Gates A7 and B6).
  • Terminal 2: Hello Kitty Wonderland (Near Gate C2) • Tasty Taiwan Waiting Room (near Gate C3) • The Metaverse Waiting Room (near Gate C3) • Echoic Memory of Taiwan Waiting Room (near Gate C7) • Coastal Living Waiting Room (near Gate D1) • Shi Shi Ru Yuan (Terminal 2, 4F Transfer Hall) • Lohas Outlying Island Waiting Room (near Gate D2) • Hualien-Taitung Discovery Waiting Room (near Gate D4) • Wild Bird Conservation Waiting Room (near Gate D8)

Note: Seating layouts and themes may change over time. If you notice a location that has been removed or relocated, you can help update the guide.

As with sleeping in any public space, keep your belongings secured and within reach, and use locks where possible.

Cots

TPE does not offer cots to stranded travellers. During major disruptions, airlines might distribute blankets. If this has changed, click here to update the guide.

Security & Safety

We’ve not been informed of any safety issues at TPE. However, sleeping in any airport can include a certain level of risk, especially when travelling alone. It’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuables. Here are a few tips:

  • Safety First. It’s a good idea to know where the security office is located and look for video cameras where you plan to sleep. You can also ask the security personnel for advice on the safest places to spend the night.
  • Don’t Seclude Yourself. If you’re travelling alone, we recommend you stay near other travellers or close to security. This will help you feel more secure and deter potential thieves.
  • Hide Your Valuables. It’s also important to hide your valuables. Don’t leave them out in plain view, as this could make you a target for theft. Additionally, if you are a deep sleeper, you may want to padlock your bag to something or sleep with your bag up against a wall to make it harder for someone to access zippers and pockets. We have received reports of sleepers who woke up without their phones and laptop bags. The travellers were left with just their headphones and laptop bag strap.
  • Stay Alert. It’s best to stay alert and awake if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages to help you stay awake, and remember that you can always catch up on sleep during your flight. These simple precautions can help you enjoy a safe night at the airport.

Pro-tip: If you sleep in the public zone, don’t be surprised if you receive an early morning wake-up call. Security is known to make the rounds, waking people up as travellers arrive for morning flights.
