Sleeping in Queen Alia Airport

Overview

Sleeping in Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport is possible, but where you can rest depends heavily on whether you are already airside. Transit passengers have access to the better options after security, including padded seating and designated rest rooms, while travellers arriving early for a flight may be limited to the harder landside departure area until check-in opens. A February 2025 traveller slept on the tiled floor before security and found the terminal relatively quiet and comfortably heated, but only with an inflatable sleeping mat, eye mask and earplugs. Seating without armrests can be difficult to find, so come prepared for floor sleeping if you cannot get airside.

Don’t expect to find any carpeted area or soft surface.” (Traveller review, February 2025)

Can You Sleep in Queen Alia Airport Overnight?

Yes. Queen Alia Airport is open 24 hours, and travellers do sleep in the terminal overnight.

If you are already airside in transit, you have access to the airport’s more sleep-friendly areas. However, do not assume you can arrive very early for a departing flight and immediately go through security. A February 2025 traveller reported needing a physical boarding pass and being unable to proceed airside until the airline check-in counter opened about four hours before departure. Arriving passengers are generally directed through immigration and into the landside Arrivals area, so remaining airside after arrival may not be practical. If you are sleeping before security, expect a harder night. The departure area has tiled floors, little or no soft flooring and limited armrest-free seating. A sleeping mat makes a significant difference.

Sleepability Verdict

Sleepability: Challenging

Queen Alia is open overnight and there are some genuinely useful places to rest airside, including designated rest rooms and padded seating. The difficulty is getting to them. Travellers who cannot yet check in may be restricted to the landside terminal, where comfortable seating is scarce and floor sleepers face hard tile rather than carpet. Experiences with noise and temperature are mixed. A February 2025 traveller found the landside departure area relatively quiet and not too cold, while a July 2025 traveller complained of both excessive noise and cold conditions and reported that airport staff would not let them sleep. Overall, Queen Alia is considerably more manageable if you are already airside or travel with your own sleep gear.

Best Places to Sleep

Airside
Airside, Level 2, near Gate 208 – Hajj and Umrah Rest Rooms
Transit passengers have access to two designated quiet rooms with basic recliners and prayer facilities. These are among the most promising free rest options at Queen Alia if you are already through security.
Seating: Basic recliners

Airside, near Gates 206-210
Padded benches in this area provide another option for resting after security. They are more sleep-friendly than much of the landside seating, although the area remains exposed to people walking past, terminal lighting and announcements.
Seating: Padded benches
Noise: Variable
Lighting: Terminal lighting
Power: Charging available nearby

Airside, near Gates 203 and 228
Past traveller reviews have mentioned the international departures areas around Gates 203 and 228 as places where travellers have managed to sleep. These reports are older, so treat them as places to investigate rather than guaranteed sleeping spots.

Landside
Landside, Departures
If you cannot get through security yet, the departure level may be your most realistic option. A February 2025 traveller slept tucked behind the phone and charging stations beside the glass windows. Space was limited, and the traveller used an inflatable sleeping mat because there was no carpet or other soft surface.
The same traveller found this part of the terminal relatively quiet and not especially cold, although a July 2025 review described both excessive noise and cold conditions elsewhere in the terminal.
Seating: Limited armrest-free seating
Floor: Hard tile
Noise: Variable
Temperature: Variable
Power: Charging stations nearby

Landside, near the Pharmacy
An older traveller review mentioned a quiet corner on the first floor beside the pharmacy where they were able to rest without interruption. There are no recent reviews confirming whether this remains a useful sleeping location, so check the area before settling in.

Landside, Arrivals Starbucks
Past travellers have used the 24-hour Starbucks in Arrivals for a more comfortable place to wait or rest. Starbucks currently lists its Arrivals location as open 24 hours, making it useful if you arrive during the night and cannot remain airside. This is a café rather than a designated sleeping area, so do not count on being able to stretch out or sleep uninterrupted.

Airport Sleeper Essentials

Cots
Cots are not available to stranded travellers at Queen Alia Airport.

Food Available Overnight
You should have more overnight food choices here than at many airports. Reported 24-hour options include:

  • Landside: Starbucks • Qahwa BLK
  • Airside: Starbucks • ElForon • Hamada • Delmonte • Donuts Factory • Blue Fig • World News Café • Al Daya’a • Crumz • McDonald’s

Starbucks currently confirms that its Arrivals and Departures locations operate 24 hours. Overnight hours at other concessions can change with flight schedules.

Luggage Storage
Left luggage service is reported to operate 24 hours before security on Level 1 near Arrivals. Reported rates are approximately JOD 3-5 per item per day. This gives landside sleepers an option for securing larger bags rather than keeping everything beside them overnight.

Showers
There are no public showers, but showers are available inside airport lounges. The Plaza Premium Lounge has shower suites and is open 24 hours. Showers are also reported in the Petra Lounge and Royal Jordanian Crown Lounge. See the Airport Guide for current lounge access information.

Airport Hotels, Sleep Pods & Cabins

There are no sleep pods or cabins inside Queen Alia Airport.

Amman Airport Hotel
Located near the airport rather than inside the terminal. The hotel provides a free 24-hour airport shuttle and offers day rooms from approximately 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, subject to availability.  Traveller feedback about this hotel has included serious complaints, so read recent reviews before booking.

Airport Lounges with Sleep Facilities

Plaza Premium Lounge
Main Terminal, Airside, Departures, Mezzanine Level, near Duty Free
Open 24 hours. The Plaza Premium Lounge is the strongest paid rest option inside the terminal. In addition to lounge seating, food and charging facilities, it has private quiet rooms and shower suites. The quiet rooms provide more privacy for resting, although they are not private bedrooms or dedicated sleep cabins. The lounge is after immigration and security, so it will not help travellers who cannot yet access the airside departures area.

The airport’s other lounges are open 24 hours but do not currently advertise dedicated sleep facilities. See the Amman Airport Guide for the complete lounge list and access information.

Safety & Security

Traveller experiences vary considerably. A February 2025 traveller sleeping landside said they felt safe and described staff at the entrance to Departures as friendly. A July 2025 traveller, however, reported feeling uncomfortable with people around the terminal and said airport staff would not allow them to sleep. There have also been past reports of petty theft before security. If you sleep in the public terminal, keep your passport, phone and other valuables secured and your luggage immediately beside or attached to you. Be prepared to move if airport or security staff ask you to.

I only did well landside because Im equipped for it.” (Traveller review, February 2025)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I arrive at Queen Alia Airport the night before an early flight?
You can stay in the landside terminal, but you may not be able to go airside immediately. A February 2025 traveller reported being unable to pass through until the airline counter opened and issued a physical boarding pass, about four hours before departure.
Can arriving passengers remain airside to sleep?
Do not count on it. A recent traveller described arriving passengers being directed through immigration and into the landside terminal, with little suitable space for sleeping along the route from the aircraft.
Is there somewhere to charge my phone near the sleeping areas?
Charging stations are available both before and after security, including near Gates 206 and 214 airside and near Starbucks landside. Outlets can be in demand, so a power bank is useful.
Is Queen Alia Airport suitable for a daytime nap?
Airside travellers have better options, particularly the rest rooms near Gate 208, padded seating around Gates 206-210 and the Plaza Premium Lounge. Landside options are considerably less comfortable.

A Quick Note
