Belo Horizonte Airport
- Tancredo Neves -

Lasting Impressions....

"The best thing about it has to be the viewing area on the top floor which spans the length of the airport and is indoors.  Unfortunately, there is nowhere to sit there." (Stephen P)

A few airport reviews from the archives

"Just passing by this good airport in Belo Horizonte. It was designed to be the 3rd busiest airport in Brazil, however it turned to be a big "white elephant". It was designed by the world-famous Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, so it resembles Brasilia Intl. But there are only a few flights (its bloody stupid far from the city - 50km), you'll feel like if you were lost in a limbo. Its quiet ...REALLY quiet. So quiet that its boring."

Well, after reading creepy stories about other airports, I decided to take the score up a notch and give this airport 2 stars.
The basic problem with the airport is that unless you are boarding, you are stuck in a semi-outdoors space ...pretty much like a garage: you have a roof over your head and that is it. The benches are very uncomfortable and located a few meters away from a street that takes you out of the airport area. You are at the mercy of the weather.
There are very few shops and they close very early. The only thing you have left is a "bar" with very few options.
People try all sorts of weird positions trying to combine the luggage with the seats to make something remotely similar to a bed but with o luck ...the benches are too hard after a few minutes of seating there.
Bathrooms are ok, and there are no pests or animals wandering around. No noises since very few people stay there overnight. Almost no security.
It is very far from the city and if you don't want to spend a lot in a cab to take you somewhere, you need to wait for the bus that takes you downtown ...except that the bus doesn't work 24 hours a day, so you are stuck there.
It was the longest night of my life...you can't sleep and there is nothing to do or see!
You pretty much feel like a vagabond!
