"Took my first trip outside of North America recently. So you're thinking, 'you went to Russia for your first overseas trip?' Yeah. Totally hardcore Dr. Zhivago stuff. Nah... not really. I was presently surprised.
Actually, Tyumen is a pretty good town as Russian cities go, being in the center of the Russian oil industry, and has a relatively decent airport. Not quite up to western standards due to the somewhat strange Russian air travel system, but recently-built anyways. At roughly the size of a non-hub city airport, the place seems built to optimistic crowd demands; which means lots of space to sprawl, very little traffic. But the pay-toilets are a pain. As a matter of fact, toilets everywhere in Russia are a pain. But hey, this is a country that just went through a revolution. You can't have everything all at once. If you go there, bring your own toilet paper supply. Some places have TP, often they don't. And if they do, it's that recycled brown hand-towel paper type. As you'd might expect, there wasn't much air traffic here. The flight itself made for some great sleeping. A Tupelov Tu-134 is about the size of a 707, and has seat backs that fold down, so you can fold the seat in front of you down and completely sprawl out. The in-flight food was excellent, too. Can't say much about the plane's general upkeep, (smelled like mildew), and taxi-ing past planes in various states of repair doesn't do much for your confidence, (how many of these did they have to take apart to get this particular plane to fly?). But once in the air, I felt at ease that if the plane wasn't exactly up-to-date with the latest technology, it was quite air-worthy. Traveling on the cheap in Tyumen is a cinch for the knowlegeable traveler thanks to the local customs and currency exchange rate. Want a ride? There are public and private taxis, and many citizens will take you anywhere you want to go for a few rubles. In general, don't trust the water. It's not exactly Mexico's finest, but it's not exactly Evian, either. Buy bottled. It's cheap."

If sleeping in the Tyumen Airport does not appeal to you, the airport web site mentions there is hotel next to the airport, but of course the name is missing....or maybe my Russian translator is not working. Search for hotels in Tyumen.
