There were guards, but they were sleeping too. – dunxd
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Freetown Airport.
What to Expect
The terminal at Freetown Airport previously functioned as a military airport but was updated in the last several years to serve commercial flights. Located on an estuary and surrounded by water, ferries are the most common way to reach the airport.
Restrooms can be dirty or non-functioning. There are a few basic shopping and dining options, including a landside restaurant and two airside options. WiFi is available in the Business Center and the airport lounge, which some passengers can pay to enter an airport lounge. See Airport Lounges in the airport guide below for location and access information.
Where to Sleep
With ferry service stopping by 1:00AM, travellers often camp out here until morning – but do arrive before the terminal closes for the night. Armrest-free benches are scattered throughout the airport and a blanket and pillow provided added comfort. For uninterrupted sleep, a nearby hotel offer shuttle service. See our Airport Hotels section below for more info.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
Pay-per-use, Single Visit Passes & Lounge Memberships
Regardless of what class of service you are flying, there is a lounge that you can enter through a lounge membership program (ie. Priority Pass). Visit the individual lounge page for more details about the lounge itself and to also find out how you can gain lounge access with just an economy class ticket!
- Sky Lounge – Location: Airside, 1st Floor. Lounge Access: Lounge membership programs and Gold/Elite Alliance members.

As of November 2018, Freetown airport is served by the following airlines: Africa World Airlines • Air Côte d’Ivoire • Air Peace • Air France • Arik Air • ASKY Airlines • Brussels Airlines • Fly Mid Airlines • Kenya Airways • KLM • Mauritania Airlines • Royal Air Maroc • Turkish Airlines.
The cheapest, but certainly not the fastest way to town is by ferry and bus. This mode of travel can take 3 hours or more.
Sea Coach Express offers a water taxi service between the airport and town. You’ll see the water taxi station when you exit the airport and walk to the right. This option is faster than the ferry, taking about 30 minutes, but costs around $40 USD for a ticket. Unfortunately, at the time of this December 2017 update, we don’t have the current rate.
