LIS Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Lisbon Portela Airport (Code: LIS).
What to Expect
Lisbon Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 handles arrivals and departures on traditional airlines (i.e. TAP Air Portugal), whereas Terminal 2 is for flights on low-cost carriers (i.e. easyJet). A free shuttle bus connects T1 and T2 on the landside (departs every 10-20 minutes, 24/7), but there’s no airside connection—passengers must exit security for transfers. Terminal 1 is reportedly much larger than Terminal 2, with better food and shopping choices. Free unlimited WiFi is available to help pass the time. Economy-class passengers can pay to use one of the first-class lounges, a few of which have showers.
Sleeping in Lisbon Airport
Sleeping in Lisbon Airport is possible, but Terminal 1 is the place to be overnight: Terminal 2 closes from 12:30 AM to 3:30 AM. Sleeping conditions are noticeably better after security in Terminal 1, where travellers report recliners, padded benches and some armrest-free seating; landside, sleep-friendly seats are scarce and many travellers end up on the cold, brightly lit stone floor. If you are landside overnight, keep your boarding pass handy, as recent travellers have reported police checking tickets during the night. For detailed sleeping locations, conditions, photos and traveller tips, see our Guide to Sleeping in Lisbon Airport.
For uninterrupted sleep, there are two hotels near the airport. See the Airport Hotels section below for locations.
In this guide we may refer to locations as “landside” and “airside”. Landside is the public area of the terminal located in the non-secure zone, before security. Airside is the secure area of the terminal that you must reach by going through security.
