ORD Airport Overview
To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Chicago O’Hare Airport.
What to Expect
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) consists of 4 terminals (1, 2, 3, and 5) with nine concourses: Terminal 1 (Concourse B, C), Terminal 2 (Concourse E, F), Terminal 3 (Concourse G, H, K, L), and Terminal 5 (Concourse M). Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected airside by pedestrian walkways; Terminal 5, the international terminal, is separate, accessible via the Airport Transit System (ATS) train, not just “across a taxiway.”
Overall, the airport is loud, busy, crowded and needs a makeover. Reviews are mixed on the cleanliness of the airport terminals, but there are many complaints of filthy restrooms. Bring hand sanitizer! Amenities are limited for an airport this size. Still, you will find several affordable eateries. O’Hare Airport has a few unique amenities, including a yoga room and an interfaith chapel. WiFi is available, and mobile charging can be found near the gates and in several locations throughout all terminals. Travellers looking for a little added comfort can pay to access one of the first-class lounges, some of which have showers.
Sleeping in Chicago O’Hare Airport
Chicago O’Hare is open 24 hours, but sleeping here can be challenging, with armrests on much of the seating and travellers frequently describing cold temperatures, bright areas and overnight cleaning noise. Recent reviews suggest you can sleep airside, although some travellers have been asked to move, while scattered couches, padded seating and quieter floor space can provide better options if you find them early. During major disruptions, the airport may also bring out temporary cots, but these are not available every night. For detailed sleeping locations, conditions, photos and traveller tips, see our Guide to Sleeping in Chicago O’Hare Airport or read the latest traveller reviews.
If comfort and privacy are what you prefer (and you don’t mind paying), there is a hotel situated outside of Terminal 2 and many nearby hotels that offer a free airport shuttle. See Airport Hotels below for more info.
