Sleeping in Bucharest Airport

1.6/5 – Challenging

Overview

Sleeping in Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP) is possible, but finding somewhere comfortable can be difficult. The airport operates 24 hours, and travellers staying overnight generally settle in the public areas before security. If you’re arriving late, catching an early flight or dealing with a missed connection, expect hard seating, limited places to stretch out and plenty of overnight activity. Most seats have armrests, although a few armrest-free benches can be found upstairs near Departures. Travellers have also described padded benches and occasional recliners after security. Noise, crowded areas and inconsistent temperatures are common complaints, particularly in Arrivals. There are no dedicated sleeping zones or sleep pods, but several nearby airport hotels offer an alternative.

Slept for 3 hours in the weirdest positions to protect my backpack.” (Traveller review, August 2025)

Can You Sleep in Bucharest Airport Overnight?

Yes. Bucharest Airport remains open 24 hours, and travellers have reported spending the night inside the terminal.

Both landside and airside areas operate overnight, but this does not mean you can enter the secure departures area whenever you arrive. A May 2026 traveller reported being restricted from passing through security until three hours before departure. If you’re arriving well ahead of an early flight, be prepared to spend part of the night before security. Security staff may check travellers staying in the public areas and ask about their travel plans. Keep your boarding pass or flight confirmation handy, and be prepared to move if requested.

Sleepability Verdict

Sleepability: Challenging

Bucharest Airport is a difficult place to get meaningful sleep. Much of the seating is hard, metal or divided by armrests, and the limited benches suitable for lying down tend to be occupied. Travellers regularly complain about noise, crowds and uncomfortable temperatures. The experience can also depend on where you settle. Arrivals has been described as particularly cold at night, while the upper Departures area is generally warmer. Some travellers have found usable benches before security, but others have struggled to find anywhere they could lie down. If you’re already through security, padded benches and occasional recliners may offer a better place to rest. However, the airport becomes busy early in the morning, so even a reasonably quiet spot may not stay that way for long.

Traveller Reality Check

Based on Sleeping in Airports traveller reviews, these are the most useful advantages and drawbacks of sleeping at Bucharest Airport.

Sleep Advantages

  • Airport open 24 hours
  • Some armrest-free benches landside
  • Warmer seating upstairs
  • Occasional padded benches airside
  • Overnight food and drink options

Sleep Drawbacks

  • Hard seating with armrests
  • Cold Arrivals area
  • Loud overnight conversations
  • Crowds build early
  • Limited comfortable sleeping spots
  • Security access restrictions

Best Places to Sleep

Bucharest Airport has a connected terminal complex with Arrivals on the ground floor and Departures upstairs. If you’re sleeping before security, the upper level is generally worth checking first. After security, look for padded benches or less crowded seating away from the busiest gates.

Landside
Departures, Landside, Upper Level
The upper Departures area is one of the more promising places to look if you cannot pass through security. An August 2025 traveller found it noticeably warmer than the Arrivals floor and spotted a bench without armrests tucked into a corner, although it was already occupied. A May 2026 traveller also described hard, armrest-free benches in the landside area, some long enough to lie down on. These are worth looking for before settling for an ordinary airport chair.
Seating: Hard benches, some without armrests
Noise: Variable, with overnight passengers nearby
Temperature: Generally warmer than Arrivals

Arrivals, Landside, Ground Floor
Arrivals is accessible to travellers who need to remain before security, but it is not a particularly comfortable sleeping area. An August 2025 review described strong air conditioning, very cold conditions and few seats without armrests. Travellers have tried sleeping in corners or adopting awkward positions across the available chairs. The area can also feel busy and unsettled overnight, making it less appealing if you’re travelling alone or hoping for several hours of uninterrupted rest.
Seating: Mostly hard chairs with armrests
Noise: Conversations and overnight activity
Temperature: Cold, particularly near air conditioning

Passageway Between Arrivals and Departures, Landside
The passageway connecting the Arrivals and Departures areas has previously been mentioned as a backup place to wait when other seating is occupied or security is not yet accessible. It is a connecting route rather than a dedicated rest area, so don’t expect privacy or particularly comfortable seating. Check for quieter corners away from people walking between the two levels.
Seating: Limited informal resting spots
Noise: Passing travellers

Airside
Departures, Airside, Gate Areas
Once through security, you may find a few padded benches and recliners among the more typical metal seats with armrests. Past reviews also mention couch-style seating near designated smoking areas, although these are not necessarily suitable for non-smokers. Most ordinary gate seating is difficult to stretch out on, and some older reviews describe slippery seats that make resting awkward. If you find a quieter corner away from active boarding gates, it may be easier to rest there than in the main waiting areas. The terminal becomes busy early in the morning, so quieter seating may only offer a short window for sleep.
Seating: Metal chairs with armrests, occasional padded benches and recliners
Noise: Variable, becoming busier early
Temperature: Variable, with some reports of excessive warmth

Airport Lounges with Sleep Facilities

Bucharest Airport has several lounges, but none of the listed passenger lounges offer dedicated sleeping areas, nap rooms or recliners specifically intended for sleeping. The lounges may provide a quieter place to sit during a long daytime layover, but they should not be considered overnight sleeping facilities. For locations, opening hours and access requirements, see our Bucharest Airport Guide.

Safety & Security

Several traveller reviews raise concerns about feeling uncomfortable or unsafe in the public areas overnight. In August 2025, travellers described loud groups, people behaving in ways that made them uneasy and difficulty relaxing while protecting their belongings. One traveller reported sleeping in awkward positions to keep a backpack secure. These experiences do not establish that theft is widespread, but they are worth considering if you’re travelling alone. If you’re spending the night landside, choose a place near other passengers rather than an isolated corner. Keep your passport, phone and valuables secured, and position your luggage where someone cannot easily access it while you’re asleep. Security checks are another recurring frustration in traveller reviews. Staff may ask about your travel plans, and you should keep your boarding pass or flight confirmation accessible.

The airport starts to get busy very early so you don’t have enough time of silence to sleep.” (Traveller review, March 2024)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to sleep at Bucharest Airport during the day?
A short daytime nap may be possible if you find an unused padded bench or quieter gate area after security. However, seating is limited, and the airport can be crowded during busy departure periods. Ordinary chairs with armrests are not particularly comfortable for longer naps.
Is there somewhere quiet to escape the crowds?
There are no dedicated public quiet rooms or rest zones. The upper landside level and less busy gate areas are worth checking, but neither guarantees a quiet place to sleep.

A Quick Note
