Overview
Sleeping in Calgary Airport is possible, whether you’re waiting for an early flight, spending a long layover in the terminal or staying overnight after a missed connection. Calgary International Airport (YYC) remains open overnight, and travellers have found places to stretch out both before and after security. However, finding a comfortable spot can take some searching. Some of the more useful sleeping areas include padded benches near International Arrivals, quieter seating on the upper landside level and sofa-style benches in the international departures area. Many ordinary airport seats have armrests, so knowing where to look makes a difference. If you’re arriving late or departing early, sleeping before security may be the simpler option. If you’re already airside, your ability to stay there overnight depends on your itinerary and security arrangements. There are also hotels connected to the terminal if you’d prefer a room.
For a solid sleep go to the third floor, full of space, no noise, no travellers passing by and also few electric plugs.” (Traveller review, June 2022)
Can You Sleep in Calgary Airport Overnight?
Yes. Calgary Airport operates 24 hours a day, and travellers have described sleeping in the terminal overnight. Sleeping before security is an option, particularly for passengers arriving late or waiting for an early departure. Some travellers have also slept after security, including in the international departures area. However, don’t assume you can enter or remain in every concourse overnight. Security checkpoints and access to certain departure areas may be restricted outside operating hours. One traveller who slept airside in October 2021 described a polite security check about their reason for staying. Keep your boarding pass handy, and be prepared to move if airport staff ask you to.
Sleepability Verdict
Sleepability: Challenging
Calgary Airport has some surprisingly useful places to sleep, including padded benches, recliners and quieter corners away from the main passenger areas. Travellers who find these spots have managed several hours of sleep, sometimes through the night. The challenge is finding them. Many standard seats are divided by armrests, and the more comfortable locations aren’t necessarily obvious. Some areas are cold, while others are affected by passenger activity or security procedures. For a short nap or an overnight stay, Calgary is manageable if you’re prepared to explore a little rather than settle for the first available seat.
Definitely recommend this little hidden gem.” (Traveller review, April 2023)

Best Places to Sleep
Found a good place to sleep? Write a Review and tell us which terminal, gate or seating area worked for you.
One of Calgary Airport’s more unusual sleeping spots is a small nook beneath the escalator near International Arrivals, across from the women’s washroom. In April 2023, a traveller confirmed that the old leather club chairs had been replaced by two small padded vinyl benches that could be moved around.
The area was quiet late at night and had an electrical outlet. It’s tucked away from the main passenger flow, although it can get cold. The benches are short, so taller travellers may struggle to stretch out.
Seating: Two small padded vinyl benches
Noise: Quiet overnight
Lighting: Sheltered corner
Temperature: Cold
Power: Electrical outlet reported
International Terminal, Airside, Concourse D
A traveller who stayed overnight in October 2021 found large, flat sofa-style benches throughout the D gates. The benches were suitable for lying down, and the traveller managed to sleep despite a brief security check. This may be worth exploring during a long international connection, although the seating layout and overnight access may have changed.
Seating: Large, flat sofa-style benches
Noise: Variable
International Terminal, Airside, Concourse E, near the Aspire Lounge
Past reviews mention curved, bow-shaped couches to the left of the Aspire Lounge in the U.S. departures area. Their shape allows travellers to stretch out more easily than ordinary gate seating.
These couches are worth looking for if you’re already in Concourse E. They are not a dependable option for travellers who cannot access the U.S. departures area.
Seating: Curved couches suitable for reclining
International Terminal, Landside, near the Concourse E Security Entrance
In February 2023, a traveller found an armrest-free bench near the NEXUS Enrolment Centre and U.S. Customs and Border Protection administrative offices, to the left of security for the E gates.
The traveller arrived around 3:00 AM and described this as one of the few nearby places where they could lie down. This is an older recommendation, but it may still be worth checking if you’re waiting for the U.S. departures security area to open.
Seating: Armrest-free bench
International Terminal, Landside, after Customs and Duty Free
Past traveller information mentions short, armrest-free benches behind the currency exchange area after exiting customs and duty free.
These may be useful for a brief rest after arriving internationally, but their shorter length makes them less suitable for a full night’s sleep.
Seating: Short armrest-free benches
A June 2022 traveller recommended the third floor near the main elevators for a longer sleep. They described an open area with little noise, few people walking past and enough room to settle down. The traveller managed approximately six hours of sleep. This is worth checking if you’re sleeping before security and want somewhere away from the busier arrivals level.
Seating: Armrest-free benches reported
Noise: Very quiet in the reported experience
Power: A few electrical outlets
Domestic Terminal, Landside, Arrivals Level
Travellers have reported finding numerous benches without armrests on the arrivals level. These may be useful if you need to lie down without going through security.
The area is more exposed to arriving passengers than the quieter upper level, so look for seating away from busy walkways.
Seating: Armrest-free benches
Noise: Variable
Domestic Terminal, Airside, Concourse A
A December 2023 traveller described a quiet lounge-style seating area in Concourse A with recliners and some electrical outlets. The loungers were particularly useful for sleeping.
This is a spot to look for if you have already passed security and want to rest without lying on the floor. The review did not identify a specific gate, so you may need to explore the concourse.
Seating: Recliners
Noise: Quiet
Power: Some electrical outlets
Domestic Terminal, Airside, near Gate A24
The airport’s Quiet Space has loungers and seating, along with yoga equipment for stretching. It is open 24 hours, although you must have access to the departures area. This may be the same recliner area praised in a December 2023 traveller review.
Seating: Loungers and chairs
Noise: Quiet area
International Terminal, Airside, near the D/E Pick-Up Area
YYC lists another 24-hour Quiet Space Lounge near the D/E pick-up area, with loungers and seating. It is free to use and may be useful during a long connection.
Seating: Loungers and chairs
International Terminal, Airside, Concourse E, near the Aspire Lounge
The airport identifies a quiet seating area near the Aspire Lounge entrance. Past traveller information also mentions curved couches in this part of the concourse, making it worth exploring if you’re waiting for a U.S. departure.
Seating: Quiet seating area; curved couches previously reported
International Terminal, Landside, Arrivals Level, between Doors 15-16
YYC recommends a quieter area toward the P2 parkade tunnel, between Doors 15 and 16. This is another place to check before security if the main arrivals hall is too busy. The airport identifies it as a quiet space, rather than a dedicated sleeping area.
Airport Sleeper Essentials
Cots
Calgary Airport does not have cots for stranded passengers.
Food Available Overnight
Calgary Airport has a 24-hour Tim Hortons option, so you may be able to get food or a hot drink during the night. The airport also has other food outlets, but many close overnight.
If you’re sleeping after security, check what remains open in your concourse before settling down. Food available elsewhere in the terminal may not be accessible without leaving the secured area.
For a long overnight stay, buying something before the restaurants close is sensible, particularly if you have dietary requirements.
Luggage Storage
Calgary Airport offers luggage and coat storage at the information desk on the Domestic Arrivals level near Door 9. The published desk hours are 7:00 AM to midnight, so this is not a 24-hour storage service. If you’re planning to sleep overnight, make sure you can retrieve your bags when needed.
Showers
Shower facilities are available in selected airport lounges, including the WestJet Elevation Lounge after security in the domestic departures area. The lounge offers reservable private showers, subject to lounge access and availability. There are no confirmed public shower facilities available to all passengers around the clock.
Airport Hotels, Sleep Pods & Cabins
Calgary Airport has two hotels connected to the terminal, both before security. These are useful if you arrive late, have an early departure or would rather stay close to your flight than travel into Calgary.
Calgary Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel
Connected via indoor walkway. Day-use rooms may be available on request.
Delta Hotels Calgary Airport In-Terminal
Connected by skywalk on the Mezzanine level. In fair weather, access is also possible by crossing from the Arrivals level near Door 10 (Air Canada area).
For more hotel options, distances and booking information, see our Calgary Airport Guide.
Airport Lounges with Sleep Facilities
YYC Quiet Space Lounges
Location: Domestic Terminal, Airside, beside Gate A24; International Terminal, Airside, near the D/E pick-up area.
Hours: 24 hours
Sleep Facilities: Loungers and seating intended for resting.
Cost: Free
These are the most straightforward lounge-style options for travellers who want to rest without paying for a traditional airport lounge. Both have designated resting facilities, although neither provides private sleeping rooms. The airport also has several conventional airline and independent lounges, but they should not be treated as overnight sleeping facilities. For access requirements, operating hours and the full lounge list, see our Calgary Airport Guide.
Safety & Security
Travellers have described sleeping overnight at Calgary Airport without serious safety incidents, although security staff may approach sleepers to check their reason for remaining in the terminal.
In October 2021, a traveller sleeping in Concourse D reported a polite security check. Other reviews describe frustrating customs and security experiences during connections, particularly when passengers had to leave the secured area and go through screening again. These experiences are worth keeping in mind if you’re travelling internationally, but they do not establish a general problem with sleeping safety. If you’re sleeping alone, keep your passport, phone and valuables secured, and place your luggage immediately beside you. The more secluded sleeping spots can offer privacy, but you should still remain aware of your surroundings.
Security did check on me but was polite, just checking why I was there.” (Traveller review, October 2021)
