Overview
Sleeping in New York JFK Airport is possible, but where you end up makes a big difference. Travellers regularly describe hard floors, armrest-heavy seating, cold temperatures and overnight noise, while access to the gate areas can depend on your terminal, airline and departure time. Terminal 4 has the strongest history of overnight use, and new 24-hour Minute Suites in Terminals 4 and 8 now provide a paid airside alternative for travellers who want an actual place to lie down.
If you’re stuck before security, the TWA Hotel connected to Terminal 5 is worth knowing about even if you are not booking a room. Several travellers have used its public areas for overnight rest, although music and the hotel’s split-flap departure board can make it noisy.
A lot of other passengers stayed overnight there (even families with little children, women and girls alone).” – Traveller review, June 2022)
Can You Sleep in JFK Airport Overnight?
Yes, travellers do sleep at JFK, but you should not assume that you can enter or remain airside all night in every terminal.
Terminal 4 has the most consistent record of accommodating overnight travellers. Recent traveller reviews describe passengers sleeping both before and after security, although travellers arriving too early to check bags or clear security have sometimes had to remain landside for several hours. A June 2025 traveller was told they could not go airside more than five hours before a 7:00 AM flight, then successfully cleared security at about 3:30 AM.
Terminal 8 has an important overnight access restriction. Minute Suites currently warns that travellers cannot enter Terminal 8 between 11:30 PM and 3:00 AM because of terminal redevelopment. If you are already airside or have booked an overnight suite, confirm how this restriction affects your plans before relying on Terminal 8 for the night.
Older traveller reviews describe being moved from Terminal 1 overnight and being asked to leave Terminal 7 at 2:00 AM. Because terminal procedures have changed over the years, treat these as warnings rather than current airport-wide policy.
If you’re sleeping at JFK before an early flight, check with your airline about how early you can check bags and clear security. Being stuck before security can significantly reduce your sleeping options.
Sleepability Verdict
Sleepability: Challenging
JFK is sleepable, but free terminal sleeping usually involves compromise. Armrests are common, good places to stretch out are limited, and travellers repeatedly mention cold temperatures, loud music, televisions, announcements and overnight cleaning. Terminal 4 offers some quieter airside pockets, but even there many travellers end up on the floor. Come prepared with warm layers, earplugs and something to cushion the floor, and your overnight experience may be much more tolerable.
The situation has improved for travellers willing to pay: Minute Suites now provides private 24-hour sleep suites after security in Terminals 4 and 8.
The area was quiet and empty, so I made my place and slept.” (Traveller review, June 2024)

Best Places to Sleep
Terminal 4, Landside, Arrivals
If you cannot clear security yet, look for the limited benches in Arrivals. A June 2025 traveller found a couple of benches without seat dividers and was able to stretch across three seats. Landside Terminal 4 is active overnight, however, so don’t expect a particularly peaceful night.
Seating: Limited armrest-free benches
Noise: Variable
Terminal 4, Airside, Concourse B, Gates B18A-D
A June 2024 traveller found this lower gate area considerably quieter than busier parts of Terminal 4. The seats had armrests, so they slept on the floor, but the area was mostly empty and staff passing through did not ask them to move. A restroom was nearby.
Seating: Seats with armrests; floor
Noise: Quiet overnight
Temperature: Comfortable
Terminal 4, Airside, Concourse A, Gates A9-A21
Travellers have described this part of Terminal 4 as a useful area to investigate when the busier B gates are too noisy. A July 2023 traveller found other passengers already sleeping here with blankets and pillows and reported lower noise and activity than elsewhere in the terminal.
Seating: Floor sleeping reported
Noise: Quieter pockets
Temperature: Variable
Terminal 4, Airside, near Gate B20
A June 2026 traveller managed to nap here during a weather delay. Screens and power outlets near the last row were useful, but the traveller ultimately slept on the floor because armrest-free seats were difficult to find. Announcements and overnight cleaners made this a noisy choice.
Seating: Armrest seating; floor
Noise: Noisy
Temperature: Comfortable
Power: Outlets reported
Terminal 4, Airside, near the duty-free area
A February 2024 traveller reported a long window ledge immediately left after descending an escalator near the duty-free store. It is flat, raised off the floor and long enough to lie on, but it is beside an escalator in a noisy area. Treat this as a backup rather than a dependable quiet sleeping spot.
Seating: Flat window ledge
Noise: Noisy
A March 2023 traveller found this area quiet and dim from around midnight to 5:00 AM. The seats had armrests, making the floor the practical sleeping option, and charging was available. The unusual wake-up call came around 4:30 AM when sparrows became active in the rafters.
Seating: Armrest seating; floor
Noise: Quiet with occasional announcements
Lighting: Dim
Power: Charging available
More recent Terminal 5 reviews are less encouraging overall. Travellers in 2024-2026 repeatedly mention difficulty finding seats without armrests, noise and cold temperatures, so don’t count on finding a good place to stretch out here.
TWA Hotel, Landside, connected to Terminal 5
The TWA Hotel’s public areas have become a useful unofficial fallback for landside sleepers. In 2024, travellers described couches and other seating in the historic terminal, with several people sleeping there overnight without being disturbed by staff. The catch is noise: music and the mechanical split-flap departure board operate through the night.
The TWA Corner Store and Vinny’s Panini are currently open 24 hours, so food and drinks are available through the night.
Seating: Couches and lounge seating reported
Noise: Music and split-flap board
Lighting: Moderate
Temperature: Comfortable in traveller reviews
A 2024 traveller described carpeted areas and reasonably comfortable benches after clearing security. An older 2021 review found quieter corners where several travellers slept on the floor, although that traveller was awakened as the terminal reopened in the early morning.
Terminal 8 access is currently restricted between 11:30 PM and 3:00 AM during redevelopment, so older overnight experiences should not be taken as confirmation that you can enter the terminal during those hours.
Seating: Benches; carpeted floor areas
Temperature: Can become cold
Airport Sleeper Essentials
Cots
JFK does not currently publish dependable information confirming that cots are routinely provided to stranded passengers. During a major cancellation or weather event, ask your airline or airport staff whether temporary sleeping equipment is being distributed.
Food Available Overnight
Don’t assume every JFK terminal has staffed food available throughout the night.
- Terminal 4, Airside: Camden Foods Express near Gate B42 is listed as open 24 hours. McDonald’s in the Retail Lounge is currently listed as open 24 hours Tuesday through Sunday and until 2:00 AM on Monday, although concession hours can change with flight activity.
- TWA Hotel, Landside, Terminal 5: The TWA Corner Store and Vinny’s Panini are open 24/7 and sell snacks, drinks and prepared food.
If you’re staying elsewhere overnight, buy food and drinks before concessions close rather than assuming something will be open near your sleeping spot.
Luggage Storage
Terminal 4, Landside: Baggage storage is available for travellers from any JFK terminal. Bags can be stored for a few hours or up to 72 hours, and you must have a confirmed ticket. If you are planning to sleep airside, remember that you will need to retrieve stored luggage before clearing security.
Showers
JFK does have shower options, but there are no general public showers in the terminals.
- Terminal 4, Airside, near Gate B39: Minute Suites has private showers available as a paid add-on to a suite reservation. Towels and toiletries are included.
- TWA Hotel, Landside, Terminal 5: The hotel’s 24-hour fitness centre has showers and changing rooms. Access is included for registered overnight and Daytripper guests, or you can currently buy a gym day pass.
Some airline lounges also have showers. See the JFK Airport Guide for the complete lounge and shower information.
Airport Lounges with Sleep Facilities
JFK has many lounges, but ordinary lounge seating should not be confused with a dedicated sleeping facility.
The Terminal 8 Chelsea, Soho and Greenwich lounges provide premium lounge facilities, with showers available in the Chelsea Lounge, but sleeping rooms are not available. For an actual private sleeping space after security, Minute Suites is the more dependable option.
For a full list of lounge locations, access requirements and current operating hours, see our JFK Airport Guide.
Airport Hotels, Sleep Pods & Cabins
If sleeping in the terminal doesn’t sound appealing, JFK now has two very different alternatives: private airside sleep suites and a full hotel connected to Terminal 5.

- Terminal 8, Airside, Concourse C, near Gate C37
TWA Hotel
Landside, connected to Terminal 5
The TWA Hotel occupies the former TWA Flight Center and has 512 guestrooms.
In addition to overnight stays, Daytripper rooms can be booked between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM for stays of four to 12 hours, making them useful for a daytime layover or a long wait between flights.
If you don’t mind a short shuttle ride, several nearby hotels offer free airport shuttle service. See a list of nearby hotels in our JFK Airport Guide.
Safety & Security
Travellers sleeping at JFK generally describe the bigger problems as discomfort, noise and overnight access rather than recurring theft or harassment. Several solo travellers have reported feeling safe in Terminal 4, including travellers sleeping among other overnight passengers.
That does not mean you should leave valuables unattended. If you’re sleeping in an open terminal area, keep your passport, phone and valuables secured and keep luggage immediately beside or attached to you.
Be prepared for staff or security to check the area or ask you to move, particularly if you are sleeping in a terminal or section that closes overnight.
The chairs all had arms so couldn’t recline except on the floor.” (Traveller review, March 2023)
