Sleeping in Montreal Trudeau Airport

Overview

Sleeping in Montreal Trudeau Airport (YUL) is possible, but overnight comfort depends heavily on whether you can remain airside. After security, seating and rest options are considerably better, making YUL more manageable for daytime naps and long layovers. Overnight travellers, however, should be prepared to sleep before security, where the remaining options include hard benches, stone seating and a small number of softer seats.

The terminal is open 24 hours, but security checkpoints are not. Recent travellers have been denied early access through security, and one November 2024 traveller on an overnight connection reported being moved out of the gate area and sent to the public side.

Cold surfaces, overnight noise and limited power near some landside sleeping spots are recurring problems. Bring warm layers, earplugs and something to soften a hard bench or floor.

It is still possible to sleep during an overnight layover at YUL… it’ll do the job for a few hours of sleep at least.” (Traveller review, January 2026)

Can You Sleep in Montreal Trudeau Airport Overnight?

Yes. YUL is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

However, do not rely on being able to sleep airside overnight. A November 2024 traveller sleeping near the gates reported being awakened and moved to the public area. In May 2025, another traveller who arrived at 11:00 PM for a 6:00 AM domestic flight was not allowed through security and had to wait landside until the checkpoint opened.

This is particularly important if your connection continues the following day. YUL states that international passengers whose onward flight is not on the same day may need to collect their luggage and follow the normal international arrivals and departures process, which puts them back before security.

Security Checkpoint A serves Canadian and international departures other than the United States and opens in the early morning. Checkpoint C, for U.S. departures and U.S. customs, opens at 4:15 AM. Published checkpoint times are subject to change.

Sleepability Verdict

Sleepability: Challenging

YUL earns a Challenging rating because the places where you are most likely to spend the night are considerably less sleep-friendly than the seating available after security.

Landside travellers describe hard granite or stone benches, cold surfaces, noise from late arrivals and rolling luggage, limited access to power and relatively few genuinely comfortable places to stretch out. A January 2026 traveller found several armrest-free benches but described some as essentially equivalent to sleeping on the floor.

Airside is better for resting while you have access to it, with older traveller reviews mentioning cushioned benches and recliner-style seating. The problem is that recent overnight experiences show you cannot count on remaining there until morning.

Traveller Reality Check

Based on recent Sleeping in Airports traveller reviews, these are the most frequently reported advantages and drawbacks of sleeping at Montreal Trudeau Airport.

Sleep Advantages

  • Terminal open 24 hours
  • Some armrest-free benches
  • Softer seating available airside
  • A few quieter landside corners
  • 24-hour landside food available

Sleep Drawbacks

  • Overnight airside access unreliable
  • Hard landside sleeping surfaces
  • Cold benches and terminal areas
  • Overnight noise and foot traffic
  • Limited landside power outlets
  • Comfortable spots are limited

Best Places to Sleep

Landside
Public Area, Landside, Departures Level – Window Benches
A January 2026 traveller reported that most of the remaining benches suitable for stretching out were near the windows in Departures. Some are armrest-free, but the location can be noisy and some of the benches are marble, so bring padding and warm layers.

Public Area, Landside – Underground Level near the Main Elevator Shaft
A January 2026 traveller found a surprisingly quiet area downstairs near the main elevator shaft, with several unused armrest-free benches. The traveller cautioned that the arrangement appeared temporary, so treat this as somewhere worth checking rather than a guaranteed sleeping area.

Public Area, Landside, Departures Level – near Java U
A March 2024 traveller found hard bench seating partly screened by decorative plants near Java U. It was not particularly comfortable, but power outlets were available nearby, making this a useful place to recharge before settling somewhere else for the night.

Public Area, Landside – across from the Air Canada U.S. Departure Counters
A March 2024 traveller found plush couches in this area. They were softer than most of the landside alternatives but fairly exposed, so expect people walking past and less privacy.

Public Area, Landside, Arrivals Level – near Subway
Stone benches in Arrivals have been used by overnight sleepers because some sections are darker and slightly more tucked away. The downside is the surface: one traveller found the bench extremely cold and repeatedly woke because of the temperature, conversations and rolling luggage from late-night arrivals. Power was also difficult to find nearby.

Airside

Airside – Domestic and International Departure Areas
If you are already through security during operating hours, look around before settling for the floor. The existing Sleeping in Airports guide notes cushioned benches and some recliner-style seating after security, making this side of the airport generally more comfortable for a daytime nap or long connection.

For an overnight stay, however, have a landside backup plan. Recent travellers have been moved out of gate areas or prevented from passing security until the early morning.

Airport Sleeper Essentials

Cots
YUL is not known to routinely provide cots to overnight travellers. If you are stranded because of a major cancellation or weather disruption, ask your airline whether temporary arrangements are being provided rather than assuming cots will be available.

Food Available Overnight
You do not have to rely entirely on vending machines if you are spending the night before security.

  • Public Area, Landside, Departures Level – Paramount: Open 24 hours and located in front of Security Checkpoint A. The restaurant serves breakfast as well as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and halal options.
  • Vending machines are also available around the terminal.

If you are sleeping landside, do not depend on airside restaurants remaining accessible overnight.

Luggage Storage
YUL does not have self-service luggage lockers. A staffed cloakroom is located Landside, Arrivals Level, between Doors 21 and 23. The airport currently lists summer operating hours of 4:00 AM to midnight. A valid photo ID plus a boarding pass or confirmation of a departing YUL flight is required. If the cloakroom is closed during the hours you plan to sleep, keep your bags immediately beside you or secured to you.

Showers
There are no public shower facilities available to ordinary terminal sleepers. Showers are available in some Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges after security, including the Domestic, International and Transborder lounges. Lounge access requirements apply, and the lounges close overnight.

Airport Hotels, Sleep Pods & Cabins

There are currently no sleep pods or sleep cabins inside Montreal Trudeau Airport.

Montreal Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel
Connected to the terminal near U.S. Departures
The Montreal Airport Marriott In-Terminal Hotel is connected directly to YUL, so you can reach it without taking a shuttle. It is the easiest alternative if you are moved landside overnight, have a very early departure or simply want a proper bed rather than one of YUL’s hard public-area benches. The Marriott also offers Guest Room Day Passes, making it an option for travellers wanting a bed during a long daytime layover rather than an overnight stay. Guaranteed early check-in and late checkout options are also advertised.

Airport Lounges with Sleep Facilities

YUL has several airport lounges, but none currently offer dedicated sleep rooms, nap pods or designated sleeping facilities. A lounge may still be useful for a shower, food or a more comfortable daytime break, but it should not be treated as an overnight sleeping option. Lounges close overnight. See the Montreal Trudeau Airport Guide for the complete lounge list.

Safety & Security

Recent traveller reviews do not show a recurring pattern of theft or personal-safety problems specifically affecting airport sleepers at YUL. Several travellers have described feeling safe while sleeping or trying to sleep in the terminal.

The bigger overnight issue is where you are permitted to remain. A traveller in November 2024 was awakened and moved out of the gate area, while a January 2026 traveller sleeping landside said they had never personally experienced problems with security. These experiences conflict, but they also involved different parts of the airport. Do not assume that seeing other people sleeping airside means you will be allowed to remain there all night.

Wherever you sleep, keep your passport, phone and other valuables secured and keep your luggage immediately beside you.

The freezing cold bench was horrible.” (Traveller review, March 2024)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I charge my phone while resting?
Power is easier to find after security. Landside outlets are more limited. A March 2024 traveller found outlets near Java U and charged there before moving to a darker sleeping spot in Arrivals.
What happens if I arrive at YUL late for an early morning flight?
You can remain inside the terminal because YUL operates 24 hours, but you may have to wait before security until your checkpoint and airline check-in facilities open. YUL recommends confirming check-in availability directly with your airline because airline counter hours depend on flight schedules.
Is there transportation from YUL during the night?
Yes. The STM 747 bus between YUL and Montréal operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This gives overnight travellers another option if terminal sleeping becomes unappealing and accommodation elsewhere makes more sense.

A Quick Note

Airport conditions change regularly. This guide is based on airport information and traveller reviews, but seating, terminal access, operating hours, security procedures and sleeping conditions can change. Use this guide as a starting point and be prepared for conditions to differ when you arrive.
